> No, soy constructor.

His mother signed the company's cheques. He was too young.

That boy, Fred Trump, built over 27,000 homes, and the Trump family's fortune.

Then he had to choose which son would carry it.

He was 12 when his father fell ill and died within days.

He learned carpentry at night. His mother had the money. Together, they were E. Trump & Son: she signed, he built.

He built houses like Ford built cars: a dozen in a week, his masons sometimes working under floodlights.

After the war, he made his five children owners of the land under a huge complex. The oldest was 12.

His companies paid them rent: $60,000 a year.

Yet after work, in a suit, he walked his sites picking up stray nails.

Then senators grilled him. With the government backing his loans, he'd borrowed millions more than that complex cost. Where was the extra? In his companies' bank.

He pointed to a rule. Had he ever seen it? "No, I am a builder."

No charges followed.

Which son? Fred Junior tried, but his father mocked him as too soft, and he left to fly airliners. Donald joined, and soon ran the company.

In 1973, the government sued them both for turning away Black tenants. They settled, admitting nothing.

By then, he had stepped aside: "I gave Donald free rein. … everything he touches seems to turn to gold."

As his mother had, he signed for his son, co-signing the loan for Donald's first Manhattan hotel.

Fred Junior died of alcoholism, at 42.

Fred died at 93. In 2017, his son Donald became president of the United States.

It all began with a mother signing for her son.
